Ministers Desmund Lee, Vivian Balakrishnan, and Gan Kim Yong Unveil Distance Marker at Kranji Node and Plant Gutta Percha Tree by Hillview Lookout Deck for Rail Corridor (North) Opening
On the 20th of July 2020, Singapore’s Minister for National Development, Mr. Desmond Lee, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Vivian Balakrishnan, and Minister for Health, Mr. Gan Kim Yong, unveiled a Distance Marker at Kranji node and a Plant Gutta Percha Tree by Hillview Lookout Deck for the Rail Corridor (North) opening.
The Distance Marker is a milestone that marks the completion of the Rail Corridor (North) – which is the longest stretch of the Rail Corridor project. This project is a joint effort between the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the National Parks Board (NParks). The Rail Corridor (North) is a 4.3 km long nature trail that stretches from Kranji node to Hillview Lookout Deck. It is part of a larger Rail Corridor project that aims to make Singapore’s rail corridors more accessible to the public.
The Distance Marker is located at Kranji node and serves as a reminder of the start of the Rail Corridor (North) journey. The marker is the first physical landmark that visitors can see when they enter the Rail Corridor. It is made of stainless steel and is designed to look like an old-fashioned railway train. The marker also features a QR code that can be scanned to access information about the Rail Corridor (North).
At Hillview Lookout Deck, the Ministers planted a Plant Gutta Percha Tree as part of the Rail Corridor (North) opening. The tree is a symbol of the Rail Corridor’s commitment to sustainability and is expected to be a symbol of hope and renewal. The Plant Gutta Percha Tree is a native Singaporean species that is known for its long lifespan and resilience.
The Rail Corridor (North) opening is a significant milestone for Singapore. The project is expected to provide greater access to nature and recreation for Singaporeans and visitors alike. The Rail Corridor (North) is a new section of the Rail Corridor, an initiative to develop a series of green spaces to connect Singapore’s urban centre with its surrounding nature areas. The Rail Corridor (North) is the first of its kind to open in Singapore and will span over 5km, running from Yishun to Woodlands.

In addition, Mr. Desmund Lee announced that the government has set aside funds to develop a series of recreational activities and facilities in the Rail Corridor (North). These activities and facilities will include nature trails, bicycle paths, and seating areas for visitors to rest and relax.
