Grand Opening of Stage 3 of Downtown Line from Chinatown to Expo with Free Rides for the First Two Days
The Singapore Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) network is expanding once again, with the grand opening of Stage 3 of the Downtown Line from Chinatown to Expo. This stretch of the Downtown Line will make travelling between these two stations much more convenient, cutting down travel time significantly. To celebrate, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) has announced that the first two days of operation will see free rides for everyone.
The free rides will be available to all passengers travelling between Chinatown and Expo stations on the Downtown Line, starting from the launch of operations on October 21st, 2019. The Downtown Line Stage 3, which connects Chinatown station to Expo station, consists of six new MRT stations – Fort Canning, Bencoolen, Jalan Besar, Bendemeer, Geylang Bahru and Mattar. It will provide a new travel option for commuters travelling to places like Bugis, Suntec City and the Central Business District.
The new line is expected to carry about 160,000 commuters daily, making it one of the busiest lines on the MRT network. This will help to reduce the congestion on the East-West Line and North-East Line, as well as provide a new alternative and faster route for commuters travelling between the two stations.
The Downtown Line Stage 3 is the latest addition to the Downtown Line, which opened in 2013 and currently spans a total of 21 stations from Bukit Panjang to Expo. With the opening of Stage 3, the entire Downtown Line will span a total of 34 stations from Bukit Panjang to Sungei Bedok.
